All certified organic wool comes from sheep which have been farmed organically and with high animal welfare standards. At Cambridge Baby we always make sure that no wool comes from farms which practise mulesing.
Wool has many benefits:
In this way, wool is a wonderful temperature-regulator, slowing down the effects of changes of temperature and helping prevent sweatiness by absorbing moisture and releasing it in response to the environment. This makes it a wonderful fabric for socks and tights for the whole family, as well as for athletes, cyclists, skiers and mountain-climbers. It's naturally high-tec and can't be beaten by synthetics!
Find out more about the properties of wool in our blog.
Dilute your wool detergent in cool water (max 30oc which will feel luke-warm) in a bowl. For heavily-soiled areas, use a little gall soap on your woollens first, testing on an inconspicuous area first.
Add your woollens to the bowl, gently stirring and squeezing the detergent through. Rinse using water at the same temperature, otherwise your wool will be subjected to "shock" and might felt up.
To dry, gently squeeze water out and wrap your wool clothes in a towel to remove the excess water.
Air-dry naturally avoiding direct heat. So, hanging on a drying rack over the bath is good, or on a clothes horse, or flat on a dry terry towel.
Re-shape while damp.
Hirsch Natur is a family business which was established in 1928 by Franz Kloppenborg, a restaurant owner who diversified into making work socks. The first machine were set up in the restaurant’s ballroom! The company is currently run by his great-grandson Matthias. While they made sturdy working socks at first, Hirsch Natur were pioneers of organic textiles. Their factory is certified to Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS) and has received the “IVN-Best” certification. They produce 50% of their own energy sustainably through solar panels too. Enjoy the great design, natural fabrics and comfortable, healthy feel of socks and tights developed with care and expertise over generations.
"I was disappointed because everything else I've purchased from this shop has been of superb quality. These socks were great for the first month or two, and then they shrunk and fell apart-- holes appeared and grew and then they were done for. I washed them in cold water in a lingerie bag and dried them on a drying rack. I thought I was taking good care of them but apparently not."
This was washed... washing ruined them :-(
This was worn by... myself (an adult with small feet)
Sizing: Feels true to size
I wouldn't really recommend this to a friend.
"I bought these as Christmas presents for family last year, and they have all worn them lots and are still really enjoying them. They still look in great condition - no sign of holes yet, unlike most other socks!!"
This was washed... These are always hand washed and have lasted really well
I'd recommend this to a friend.
"I wanted to stay warm and comfortable while working during lockdown. These socks were perfect."
This was washed... I They need handwashing and I was devastated when one accidentally was machine washed at 30C. After stretching it was great to find it still fits.

"Lovely soft wool socks, not thick so I can wear in most of my shoes. Warm for cold days but also not hot on warmer days."
This was washed... not needed washing yet
This was worn by... a middle-aged woman with notoriously cold feet
Sizing: A little generous
"Last Yule, these were bought for my wife. They fitted well (she has longer than average feet because she's 6'2" tall) they keep her feet warm, which is important because the blood seems to cool quickly as it passes down her long legs so her feet tend to be too cold for her but not with these socks. They look great and survive washing even though they are washed much more than recommended by Cambridge Baby. Why only 4 stars and not five? That's because I'm a tightwad so harbour some resentment at the price of the socks but the wife's worth it."
This was washed... washed fine
This was worn by... My wife
"These are beautiful socks andwill come into their own in the spring. For now I struggle to divest myself of the chunky version."
This was worn by... me, 50 something woman
