Dear Disana Customers
The temptation was great to have Chat GPT write
the text for the introduction to the new disana
Spring|Summer25 catalogue. The topics of cotton
and linen were quickly entered. Of course, there were
also buzzwords such as “organic” and “sustainability”.
And then a few summery attributes such as “light”
and “airy”.
The result was actually very pleasing. The words were
beautifully chosen, the grammar perfect and if we had
already had an AI spellchecker back then, our mum
would certainly have been less worried during our
school days.
There was nothing technically wrong with the text
either. Cotton and its properties were well described.
The typical thin and thick areas of a linen yarn, the
so-called “flaming”, were also well described.
But what Chat GPT didn’t realise was that it was
precisely this flaming that caused us considerable
difficulties when developing the light summer knit
fabrics.
Such an inconsistent yarn creates wonderful effects
and great melanges in the fabric. But our knitting
machines don’t run such thick patches at first.
Not at all.
Days of experimentation and the experience and skills
of our knitting specialists were required to harmonise
the machines and yarn. Even chewing gum paper was
used to trick a stubborn sensor.
Now, however, hundreds of hook needles catch a thin
thread within a fraction of a second as it races across
them at 0.8 metres per second. And it does so without
disturbing thick spots in the yarn.
Working with real people is still important to us.
The specialists, magicians, artists and inventors in
our production. Because every day we come across
something new that cannot yet be solved with artificial
intelligence.
We think you might find this interesting. Because the
fact that our summer fabrics are “light” and “airy”
is a matter of course. We don’t need an AI-generated
explanation for that.
